Wookie's walking in Memphis......

Day 1 Thursday January 17th
So I'm in Memphis TN until Sunday for a St. Jude Country Cares for Kids radio seminar. I'm here with hundreds of radio people from across the country and what we'll be doing for the next couple of days is touring the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and meeting with some of the patients and their families. Not to mention we'll be having meetings and seminars on how our St. Jude radiothon helps the hospital continue to wipeout childhood cancer(s).
So we left PGH in a snow storm....land in Memphis and it's only 22 degrees so not much better down here than it is up in PGH weather wise anyway. We had about 5 hours to kill until we had to meet everybody for our welcome dinner, so since this is my third time down here for the seminar, and the three other Y108 people who haven't been to Memphis I got to play tour guide.....
We went all throughout the huge Peabody complex and down onto Beale Street which is very much like Bourbon Street in New Orleans. While we were on Beale street this woman approaches me and asks if I could help her with something, it turns out she's on the next season of The Amazing Race and part of her challenge is to get people to try a new Pepsi product right there on the street in front of a street amphitheater sponsored by Pepsi. So, with The Amazing Race being one of my favorite show of course I said yes and helped out as much as I could. I was the last person she needed to complete her task and off she ran...it was over before I knew it!
At the welcome dinner we were able to mingle with some people from the Chicago area radio stations....the best part was the tension if there was any was broken pretty early when one of the St. Jude reps from the Chicago office slipped on the wooden floor due to the shoes she was wearing and landed on her backside pretty hard. Picture this if you will....a very cute tiny girl in high heal boots walking then all of a sudden her feet going flyiong over her head and she lands hard on her backside....everyone kind of looked around and the place got pretty silent only to be replace by her laughter, followed by everone elses....that was the start of a pretty good evening.
So, to finish out the night I went and bought a shirt from Elvis's personal tailor Mr. Lansky who has a shop inside the Peabody hotel where I'm staying and walked up and down Beale Street into all of the great blues bars.
Tomorrow, I have a tour of the hospital (which I'm looking forward to) and then dinner at the world famous Rendezvous BBQ! Talk to you then.
